Come Holy Spirit

English is spoken as a first language by the majority of people in Great Britain, North America, Australia and New Zealand. It is spoken as a second+ language in many other parts of the world.

This resource has been curated in Aotearoa New Zealand where English is spoken by most of the population and English language resources are easily accessible. Thus the focus of this section is on resources that are bilingual or multilingual.

Each of these songs is bilingual or multilingual and liturgically appropriate for Pentecost:

We also recognise that a significant amount of choral and organ music frequently used in an otherwise English-speaking service was composed by people of different cultures. This music reminds us not only of the global breadth of the church, but also links us to the Body of Christ in another time. Examples of music suitable for Pentecost include:

  • Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt – Bach
  • Choral varié sure le Veni Creator  – Duruflé
  • Messe Solenelle – Vierne
  • Petite Messe Solenelle – Rossini
  • Veni Sancte Spiritus – Plainsong
  • Veni Sancte Spiritus – Mozart
